So far mass media has banged the drum about pop music and offshore 'pirate radio' to such an extent that it is now firmly entrenched that this is the story of so-called 'free radio' in the Sixties. From the demise of 'Radio Caroline' after the 1967 Marine Offences Act, and especially after 1990 when Ian Cowper Ross published 'Rocking the Boat', a whole industry of fanaticism has taken off that worships anything to do with broadcasting from offshore. After noticing a thread on the Garry Stevens' Blog called 'Offshore Radio Cooks - Name the Best and Worst'! It seems as if the anoraks are now scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas, and that thread reminded me of this scene from a Monty Python movie .... The Polaris submarine base at Holy Loch in Scotland dispatched one of its nuclear-armed submarines to stand guard over the natural land-sea 'choke-hold' for ships exiting the Baltic Sea on their way to the North Sea. Standing guard to shoot down USSR jets on the other side of this choke-hold was a USA Nike-Hercules battery of nuclear armed missiles. Off neutral Sweden was a radio ship supposedly there to play pop music, but according to Bill Weaver who had charge of this vessel for the trio of Gordon McLendon, Robert F. Thompson and Clint Murchison Jr., it was really a monitoring ship with underwater sonar built into its hull in order to report on USSR incursions into Swedish waters by the Soviet nuclear fleet of vessels that was serviced at their ports in the Baltic Sea. Contrary to misinformation in the published book called 'Triple Double Cross' that was published after Weaver's death, his own manuscripts which we now have, tie-in to the development of sonar after WWII for both oil and natural gas underwater exploration, and the monitoring of submarines at strategic locations during the Cold War years.
There have recently been a number of non-accepted posts to our 'Publishing News' site, and to the referral site 'Now & Then: Conversation Central' regarding features on this Blog about North Sea oil and gas, and specifically the 'Piper Alpha' disaster. Questions are being asked about information that is already available on this Blog, albeit on different days. If the people asking these questions are only superficially glancing at copy, but not actually paying attention to details, then that is their problem. This Blog is offered free of charge as a public service in the public interest. If those asking these 'lazy' questions want answers, they can be found on this Blog right now. Otherwise they will have to wait for publication of the book 'Dial 999 for Caroline: the girl who never was'.
This Blog began with a mission to unmask the falsity of the resurrected nonsense spewed forth for personal gain by Paul Alexander Rusling. He did that with his 2019 vanity publication called 'The Radio Caroline bible'. Rusling based his premise upon a 1990 myth that was unleashed upon the world by Ian Cowper Ross. Back in 1964, as a young and aimless kid looking for a meal ticket into the easy life of Britain's High Society Establishment, Ian Cowper Ross eventually signed-on in 1966 via marriage, and then he disappeared from British eyes for a time. But he was not hiding, because he then reappeared in the glitzy-drug world that was occupied by some Californians during the disco years. A series of events then occurred in his married life that eventually brought him back to the world of his aristocratic mother-in-law in the United Kingdom. That is when she paid for his rambling 1990 novel called 'Rocking the Boat' to be published. This book was supposedly a veiled account of how 'Radio Caroline' had been created back in 1964 with the help of his Ian's father, after Ian had been introduced first to Allan Crawford; then to Christopher Moore who introduced him to a gadly named Ronan O'Rahilly who Ian took to meet his father. Then, according to this fantasy story, Ian's father arranged for Ronan, who he had just met, and after Ronan kept addressing Ian's father Charles as "Jimmy". So bowled over was by this young Irishman named Ronan, that Ian's father couldn't help himself but to immediately call his friends by phone. He arranged for Ronan, who he had just met, and who was many years his junior, who kept calling Charles "Jimmy", to go to the bank and withdraw a very large sum of money in cash, so that Ronan and Ian and Chris could go and start 'Radio Caroline'. They get the cash and immediately begin squandering it, but Chris is sent to Europe to go an buy a ship for which he has absolutely no training. This is a very stupid and totally unbelievable story without a shred of truth behind it. However, the anorak community has bought into it hook into line and sinker. Because after Ian's novel called 'Rocking the Boat' appeared in 1990, he turned his rambling book into a BBC television program that masqueraded as a factual documentary. It wasn't, but the British Broadcasting Corporation jumped into bed with this deceptive fraud which then triggered an avalanche of fake storyline books, magazine articles; newspaper features as well as a string of fake documentary radio and television programs. All of them hosted by loud mouths who claimed to know the "true story" as they reinforced Ian's rubbish tale, but in fact, none of these people, many of them DJs, knew diddly-squat about the real story. But in December 2019, along waddled Paul Alexander Rusling into this same circus in order to milk once again this hoodwinked and brainwashed community of anoraks with his own omnibus vanity book. One anorak compared it to the 'Holy Bible', because Rusling had called his book, a 'bible'. Rusling's purpose was in a quid-pro-quo move to validate the claims of a tiny vanity-based UK licensed British radio station, who in turn would endorse and sell his vanity publication. This tiny and insignificant blob on the AM broadcast band obtained its UK license in the name of a UK registered company which deceitfully, had filed false information with UK Companies House. All of this was done in order to support the fraudulent claim that this new and totally irrelevant and bogus station is the lineal descended of the 1964 station called 'Radio Caroline'. This is nothing more than fraud upon fraud; scam upon scam for personal gain, by people engaging in perpetuating the Ian Cowper Ross mythology, and the ridiculous aggrandizement of Ronan O'Rahilly. But why, you wonder should we care? The reason is this: For decades we have been attempting to investigate and document the true story of British broadcasting, and in so doing we have confronted a steady stream of cover-ups and lies as a result. But why? If this all about pop records and radio of the nostalgic past, why should anyone care? Why should we care? The answer to that question is this: That is not what this story is all about! This is a huge story that questions the even questions the validity of law and order in the British Isles. In more practical terms, i directly impacts the huge and ongoing debate called 'Climate Change' involving the use of natural gas and oil extracted from the waters beneath the North Sea. It was upon those waters that 'Radio Caroline' was squatting - first as the real thing from 1964 to 1967, and then, with a number of unrelated imitations on vessels using the name 'Radio Caroline', until the year 1990. Then with a major change in UK legislation, the last bogus 'Radio Caroline' ship came into personal possession of the man heading up the tiny UK company that obtained a tiny UK license to broadcast as 'Radio Caroline'. Some years ago in 1980, a parody movie about the American music business just prior to 1964, was released to movie theatres across the USA. It is called 'The Idol Maker', and along with many other performances, at its conclusion Ray Sharkey sings a solo piece with lyrics in which the word "love" could be exchanged for the word "learning" and for the singular "I" to become the plural "we", and then this song could be our anthem: ..... "Learning is a life long puzzle. But isn't learning why we're here? You got to make a million pieces fit if you want to make some sense of it, and we'll never quit - oh, no, we've just begun. 'Cause we believe it can be done, we believe it can be done. And maybe when it hurts the most, oh, maybe that means we're getting close. And when we think we can't get though it, maybe all we've got to do is just - do it and we believe it can be done ...." It has taken decades for us to reach the conclusions achieved in this edition of the Blog, but we finally came to know the essential facts in evidence which eventually enabled us to expose the fraud perpetrated in the name of that long-deceased, and never resurrected radio station called 'Caroline'. Now you will begin to understand why we have focused our attention on exposing this fake story! Our report is in thee parts: The first part of our investigation concerns the genuine radio station called 'Caroline' that broadcast from two offshore ship locations, to the northwest and to the southeast of the island of Great Britain between the years from 1964 to 1967, and the final act of towing away those two ships in March of 1968. We have already covered much of this information (but by no means all of it), in previous editions of this Blog, and so that will not be the focus of this edition. The second part concerns a hodge-podge of claims made by various people using various locations to broadcast under the name of 'Caroline', but having no legal or financial connection to the authentic phase from 1964 to 1967. This phase primarily centered around a succession of two ships called 'Mi Amigo' and 'Ross Revenge' and the person of Ronan O'Rahilly. That offshore phase also limped off the air for the last time in November 1990, and one year later the former ship and now hulk called 'Ross Revenge', was towed into UK waters and thus placed under UK legal jurisdiction. The third phase is tied to the commencement of a barrage of misleading information that has been creating a revisionist version of events which never happened, and which differ from the known events that did happen. We call this phase 'Yesterday Never Happened'. This third phase raises the question of "who benefits" from this deception? The answer to that question is that it concerns yet another operation calling itself 'Radio Caroline', but not broadcasting from a ship, but from on land. It has managed to secure both a UK license to broadcast, and it has also gained access to a number of UK licensed repeater operations, as well as transmission via the Internet. In order to finance its operations, this 'Radio Caroline' has registered a UK operating company and fictitiously claimed a heritage that it does not have in order to raise and sustain enough income to support its activities. The rusting hulk of the ship that was once the motor vessel 'Ross Revenge', has now become the icon of this new enterprise, although its owner is a person, and not the broadcasting company. By claiming a bogus heritage, this new 'Radio Caroline' company separates itself from being a tiny and totally insignificant outlet for recorded music, to being a part of the legacy of British commercial broadcasting. This is a fraudulent claim having absolutely no foundation in fact. This new company was first registered to the present operators on March 4, 2011 and its list of directors reflect the deception engaged in by this company: On March 4, 2011, Malcolm Charles Smith was appointed as a director, and he resigned on October 19, 2016. On October 20, 2016, Peter Moore was appointed as director, and he resigned on January 11, 2018. On November 14, 2017, Malcolm Charles Smith was again appointed as a director, and he has not resigned. The problem with this official record is that Malcolm Charles Smith and Peter Moore are one and the same person using two different names. The name Smith is a registered birth name, but the name Moore is a pseudonym for Smith. However, as is reflected in the official UK government records, Smith resigned on October 19, 2016 and the very next day on October 20, 2016, 'Peter Moore' took his place as a director, except that 'Moore' is really Smith. To confuse matters even further, 'Moore' who is Smith, resigned on January 11, 2018, but long before he did so, Smith rejoined the board on November 14, 2017, which reflected that Smith and 'Moore' were simultaneously directors, except that 'Moore' is Smith under a false identity. In effect, this meant that Smith was holding two offices as director, one under his legal birth name, and the other one under a fictitious name. Paving the way for this bogus registration by a company falsely claiming to be the 'heir in succession' to the original 'Radio Caroline' of 1964-1967, is a series of coordinated events that began with the 1990 publication of a book, and the transmission of a documentary shown on the BBC4 television channel. The focal point of this story seems to be the person of Ronan O'Rahilly, but the more that this documentary goes forward, the more that it echoes a false narrative told in a book written by Ian Cowper Ross who repeatedly appears on screen in the television program, and whose tale is central to its fraudulent account of the past. It is from here in 1990 that a succession of interviews with Ian Cowper Ross take place on air and in various forms of print media in which his totally false account of the past has been repeated over and over and over again. Then, the worst of the worst appeared in the form of Paul Alexander Rusling's book called 'The Radio Caroline bible'. It directly links the authentic 'Radio Caroline' of 1964, to the bogus 'Radio Caroline' that is now on the air in 2021. This raises the question about the intervening years between 1968, when the original 'Radio Caroline' limped off the air and disappeared forever, and the reemergence in 1990 of Ian Cowper Ross. That is what we have been investigating, and that is what we will be revealing in the book 'Dial 999 for Caroline'. We will also show you how all of this relates to a terrible event: |
