July 21 - Background Stories to the Greenore rail and port facilities: The Dundalk and Enniskillen Railway, which later changed its name to the Irish North Western Railway (INWR) approached the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) to develop both a port and railway in the Carlingford Peninsula at what is now know as Greenore. On this date the Irish North Western Railway was given the go ahead, but financial difficulties prevented development.

Exact date unknown at this time - By 1869, LNWR had created a new Dundalk to Greenore Railway with its own small town at Greenore that included a station to which LNWR added a hotel and adjoining golf course, plus a quay. At the other end of the line in Dundalk, LNWR built both a station and quay to accommodate steamers. The new service opened on April 30, 1873.
