December 6 - Following the failed 'Rising' of 1916 the fighting developed into a civil war against the British Crown. The patriots fighting for an independent Ireland did so under the banner of a de facto Irish Republic, and its fighters morphed from the Irish Volunteers into the Irish Republican Army.
This phase of the struggle to throw off the yoke of the British Crown came to halt in London on December 6, 1921. That is when the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed in London, but it did not become effective until March 31, 1922.
