Radio Caroline was the creation of John Stanley, acting in concert with his father Charles Orr Stanley who was the architect of the Pye Group of Companies. They stepped-in when various attempts by other people failed to put an offshore station on the air that could broadcast to the United Kingdom.
Using the resources of the Pye Group of companies, but not acting the the name of this entity, the Stanleys decided to created Radio Caroline as a battering-ram to force the UK Conservative (Tory) government into issuing land-based sponsored, commercial radio licenses to the many registered operators waiting for licenses to broadcast.
As a 'front' to divert attention away from Pye and the newspaper and printing consortium that was backing their plans, the Stanleys brought in Jocelyn Stevens with his close association to Princess Margaret.
In turn, Stevens employed what one MP called a 'decoy duck' named Ronan O'Rahilly to become his spokesperson. But O'Rahilly not only directed attention to himself, he also played up the part that his England-born grandfather had played in Ireland during the 1916 aborted Easter Uprising.
Having failed in their objective to get land based licenses when the Tories lost the UK General Election on October 15, 1964, the Stanleys pulled out. That is when the 'Jewish Mafia' moved into the void with help from the Italian Cosa Nostra in New York and New Jersey, and organized crime took over to keep Radio Caroline on the air.
This period lasted until the UK forced the closure of Radio Caroline with the Marine Offences Act. It became UK law at midnight, on August 14, 1967. Radio Caroline limped-on in a haphazard and unprofessional manner until the Wijsmuller company towed its two ships away on March 3, 1968, and the mv Caroline was then scrapped.
